Families paid extra $108 million for choosing deregulated energy supply.
How to read this chart across: NRG on line 8 was Maryland’s #2 market share residential energy supplier. NRG’s portfolio had 45,389 customers that on average paid 11¢ per kWh electricity. The comparison Maryland regulated “standard” electricity rate was 7.4¢.
Average NRG household used 11,648 kWh of electricity, and paid on average $418 above the utility electricity rates.
NRG brands initially offer variable and fixed rate introductory offers that auto-renew to variable rates as described in their customer contracts.
Constellation compared to “Other 48 Suppliers”
In MD, Constellation has #1 market share with 115,687 customers. Exelon corporation owns the regulated utilities BGE, Pepco and Delmarva, 83% of MD households. Constellation has consistently priced on average to the state regulated standard “SOS” rate. The 263,639 households not on Constellation paid an average 42% more for the same electricity offered by their regulated utility, $325 more per family.
Since 2000, the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration has collected self-reported data for any company that sells any type of electricity. The data is reported in the EIA-861 filings. Regulated utilities and deregulated retail suppliers report revenues, MWH sold and customer counts as of 12/31/XX. This data is separated each year by suppliers that offer a mix of energy types (fossil-fueled electricity) from suppliers that market “100% renewable electricity.” Renewable-only supplier results are found here.
